1. As for the first issue, one of our classmates shared in this case study that there would be three stages in reading English-written mathematics: reading English, what is being asked, and what is to be solved. Our instructor also emphasized that no successful case has been found in content-based instruction (CBI) so far.
Sometimes, it’s also interesting in terms of defining a term like code-switching: Some say “using L1 to elaborate the terms in L2”, some pinpoint “using L1 and L2 randomly in the process of speaking”, and some highlight “using L1 to talk with his grandparents; L2, teacher at school.” Overall, it shows the importance of sticking to the definition before being further explored.
2. To the second issue, we spent more time on distinguishing enculturation, acculturation, and deculturation. We all agreed that learning a language is one of the most useful ways to understand the culture of that language.
