With an aging population Taiwan faces an issue of increase in abortion which inadvertently affects the annual birth rate. In 1985, Taiwan legalized abortion. However there is protection for the fetus after viability as the woman in Taiwan cannot get an abortion after 24 weeks, except to save the health or life of the mother or if the fetus has a congenital defect. More so as of recent, the bureau of health, has advised that the age to have abortion be reduced from age 20 to 18 years but must be obtained through a legal abortion process under special circumstances such as the following: Medical Reasons, Mental health issues, Psychological impact and Rape, incest or seduction.
In addition, the women in Taiwan do not have a constitutional right to receive an abortion without their husband‘s consent, as well unmarried women under age 20 must obtain permission of her parents. On special case as such, a mentally handicapped woman should obtain permission of a guardian. This research is geared towards finding out how Taiwanese feel about the age for abortion being lowered along with whether or not a married woman should receive her husband’s consent. Given the nature of research our research will be done using the descriptive structure. We focused on age groups this, 18- 20 years old, 21-35 years old, 36-49 years old and 50 years old-over. Due to the sensitivity of the issue our questionnaire is arranged in close-ended and contingency questions (not applicable to strongly agree). Overall this research is a new topic, as there is not much research or statistical data provided for Taiwanese views on abortion issue. We therefore hope our research can be used as basis for other researchers to conduct a more explanatory route, by helping the researchers find out why Taiwanese have such views on the matter.
